First, let’s look at the word MOOD。 In grammar, MOOD is used to refer to a verb category or form that conveys the speaker‘s attitude toward a subject。 In English, there are four moods:
首先,我們先來了解一下什麼是“語氣”。“語氣”是一種動詞形式,用以表示說話者的意圖或態度。英語中,有四大型別語氣:
◆ the indicative mood: states facts or truths
陳述語氣:敘述事實、真實情況的句子。
★ The cat is fabulous。
★ I make videos。
★ Adam is not perfect for this job。
◆ the interrogative mood: asks questions
疑問語氣:表示詢問的句子。
★ Is the cat fabulous?
★ What kind of videos do you make?
★ Are they educational?
◆ the imperative mood: expresses an order or a command
祈使語氣:表示命令、要求的句子。
★ Look at that fabulous cat!
★ Leave me alone!
★ Please sit down。
◆ the subjunctive mood: used for conditional or imaginary situations or to express wishes, demands, or suggestions
虛擬語氣:用於條件性的或非真實的情況,或用來表達願望、建議或命令等。
★ I wish I could look at that fabulous cat all day。
★ If I were you, I would say YES。
★ I demand he apologize。
The Subjunctive Mood
虛擬語氣
The subjunctive mood is the verb form used for conditional or imaginary situations or to express wishes, demands, or suggestions。 And it is used mostly in formal contexts。
虛擬語氣是透過謂語動詞的變化表現出來的,用於條件性的或非真實的情況,或用來表達願望、建議或命令等。經常被用於正式的文本當中。
We always use the subjunctive mood for:
◆ To express commands, advice or suggestions
表達命令、意見或建議等。
◆ To express importance, urgency of something, ect
表達某事的重要性、緊迫性等。
◆ Wishful thinking
表達主觀願望。
◆ Fixed expressions that use the Subjunctive Mood
某些固定的搭配中使用虛擬語氣。
◆ Situations or conditions that are hypothetical, imaginary, contrary to reality or fact
假設的、想象的、與現實相悖的情況。
To express commands, advice or suggestions
表達命令、意見或建議等。
◆ Some indicative verbs often attract the subjunctive mood。
一些指示性動詞常使用虛擬語氣。
◆ Particular indicative verbs + (that) noun clause with base verb。 And it is acceptable to omit THAT。 In these structures, we use
the base verb or should + base verb for all subjects
。

◆ And it can also have a negative form:
not + the base verb
。
