1。 用作形容詞，本義為“重的”，有不少引申用法，注意不要直譯，如：

heavy rain / snow（大雨 / 雪），

heavy frost

嚴重霜凍；

the effects of heavy drinking

過量飲酒的後果

heavy fighting激烈戰鬥

a heavy fine高額罰款

heavy irony 充滿了諷刺

a heavy smoker（煙癮大的人），

heavy traffic（交通擁擠），

heavy smoke（濃煙）

a heavy drinker/smoker

酒癮 / 煙癮大的人

a heavy sleeper

睡得很死的人

heavy curtains

厚窗簾

a heavy coat

厚外套

但也有些比喻用法與漢語習慣一樣，可直譯，如a heavy cold（重感冒），heavy losses（重大損失），等等。

2。 詢問重量，可用 how heavy。如：

How heavy is the parcel？ 這個包裹有多重？

比較：How old is he？ 他多大？ / How long is it？ 它有多長？

但是值得注意的是，heavy 有一點與 old， long， wide， high， tall等形容詞不同，即 heavy 一般不用於表度量的名詞之後。如：

正：The rope is five meters long。 這根繩子長5米。

正：The parcel is five kilos。 這個包裹重5公斤。

誤：The parcel is five kilos heavy。（應去掉heavy）
