在藝術天才紀伯倫的心中，其祖國黎巴嫩是塵寰中最美的地方。

正如他在作品中寫道：“只要我一閉上眼睛，那充滿魅力、莊嚴肅穆的河谷、雄偉多姿的高山，便展現在面前；只要我一捂上耳朵，那小溪的潺潺流水和樹葉的沙沙聲便響在我的耳邊，我像哺乳的嬰兒貪戀母親的懷抱那樣，思念這往昔如畫的美景。”

那麼今天就讓我們一起閒讀他的散文詩《論美》，瞭解他對於美的理解與感悟。

《論美》

Where shall you seek beauty, and how shall you find her unless she herself be your way and your guide?

如果美不以自身為途徑，為嚮導，你們到哪裡，又如何能找到她呢？

And how shall you speak of her except she be the weaver of your speech?

如果她不是你們言語的編織者，你們又如何能談論她呢？

The aggrieved and the injured say, “Beauty is kind and gentle.

傷心痛苦者說：“美是善良而溫柔的。

Like a young mother half-shy of her own glory she walks among us.”

她像一位因自己的榮耀而半含羞澀的年輕母親，走在我們的身邊。”

And the passionate say, “Nay，beauty is a thing of might and dread.

熱情奔放者說：“不，美是強烈而令人驚畏的。

Like the tempest she shakes the earth beneath us and the sky above us.”

The tired and the weary say, “beauty is of soft whisperings. She speaks in our spirit.

Her voice yield to our silences like a faint light that quivers in fear of the shadow.”

But the restless say, “We have heard her shouting among the mountains,

看到這裡開頭的一句“Where shall you seek beauty， and how shall you find her unless she herself be your way and your guide？ ”中的“be”，很多人會很奇怪“be”為什麼用原形，而不用“is”。

這是因為這裡的“be”是“成為”的意思，例如瑞典歌手Darin Zanyar在Pop Idol 2004上演唱的一首好聽的歌曲《Be What You Wanna Be》（《成為那個你想成為的人》）。

此外我們看到這是一個“unless”引導的條件狀語從句，要明確一點“unless”不可以引導虛擬語氣，儘管有unless = if…not ， 但是這隻適用於真實條件句，假設條件句只能用if結構。

Unless 與 if…not 的意義並不完全相同。Unless 強調例外的事件，所以準確地說，它的意義為“除非”。當條件與已知事實相反時，必須用 if…not， 不用unless。例如：

If the begger had not grabbed the rich man’leg ，it would have been ignored。

如果那個乞丐沒有抓住富人的腿，就會無人過問。

1。be shy of… ：害羞於…

另外，“shy”還有一種用法：

Be shy about doing something： He is a bold speaker and he is not shy about speaking his mind。

2．faint： dim。微弱的

quiver： shake。 顫抖

in fear of： be fearful of。 害怕

3。beat v。翅膀拍打

補充詞彙： heartbeat：心跳 ； drumbeat：鼓聲

Roaring：動詞roar 的現在分詞。

adj。風哮雨嚎的；喧譁的。

n。吼聲；咆哮；怒吼

At night the watchmen of the city say, “Beauty shall rise with the dawn from the east.”

夜晚，城市的守夜人說：“美將與晨光一同從東方升起。”

And at noontide the toilers and the wayfarers say,“We have seen her leaning over the earth from the windows of the sunset.”

In winter say the snow-bound, “She shall come with the spring leaping upon the hills.”

And in the summer heat the reapers say, “We have seen her dancing with the autumn leaves, and we saw a drift of snow in her hair.”

All these things have you said of beauty.

Yet in truth you spoke not of her but of needs unsatisfied,

And beauty is not a need but an ecstasy.

But rather a garden for ever in bloom and a flock of angels for ever in flight.

People of Orphalese, beauty is life when life unveils her holy face.

But you are life and you are the veil.

Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror。

美是凝視自己鏡中身影的永恆。
