猜想體育運動俱樂部為什麼是 sports club，而不是 sport club

我們知道，球類名詞如 football，basketball，baseball 或 volleyball 等都可以表示一種體育運動，分別為足球運動，籃球運動，棒球運動或排球運動等，此時它們是不可數名詞，因此在討論運動或比賽時，常用 play + 球類名詞，如 play football 等等。

然而同時球類名詞本身卻是可數的，表示對應的足球，籃球，棒球或排球等，那麼如何表示“玩球”呢？是 play a football 或 play the football 嗎？

答案是不是，當表示玩耍時，要用 play with，如 play with a football，意為“玩足球”，此時的 football 是指足球，是一個

可數

名詞。那麼 play a football 或 play the football 是什麼意思呢？

縱觀 play 的用法，你會發現，其實 play a football 或 play the football 也是正確的，只是意思截然不同；play 的其中一個意思是“打出，踢出，擊出（球）”等，那麼 play a football 或 play the football 就意為“踢出足球”，但這個意思跟運動完全沒有關係。

Sport 是所有體育運動的統稱，那麼它首先是一個不可數名詞，相當於 activity，例如：

I‘m not interested in sport。

我對體育運動不感興趣。

The market has excellent facilities for sport and recreation。

這個市場有完善的運動和娛樂設施。

Amphetamines are essentially included in all sport-related drug-testing protocols and are readily detected in the urine。

現在回頭來看體育運動俱樂部，當某個俱樂部只提供某個體育運動對應的運動場地和器材時，可以直接用具體的體育運動來名詞，一般表示職業運動俱樂部，如 a golf club，意為“高爾夫俱樂部”，the New York Yankees baseball club，意為“紐約揚基職業棒球俱樂部”，等等。

那麼言外之意，a sports club 中的 sports 表示的是包含了很多體育運動的俱樂部，這應該就是我們

sports 而不用 sport 的原因，而 a sport club 實際上是不妥或者模稜兩可的，例如：

Compared with that， joining a sports club not only saves money but gets yourself into shape。

相比之下，加入一個體育俱樂部不僅可以省錢，而且可以強身健體。

需要注意的是，有時“play + 球類名詞”並不全是表示體育運動，如 play hardball；hardball 除了表示棒球運動之外，還可以用於一個習語 play hard ball，意為“採取強硬手段，絕不手軟”等，例如：

The president is determined to play hardball with the terrorists。

總統決心對恐怖分子採取強硬手段。

還有一個就是 play ball （with sb），它跟體育運動沒關係，它也是一個習語，意為“（與）某人合作”，例如：

If the tenant still doesn’t play ball with us to pay the rent， we will have no choice but to report to the police。

如果房客還不跟我們合作交房租，那麼我們別無選擇，只能報警。

Play ball 還有開球的意思，這個用法來自棒球裁判員要求開始比賽，例如：

It always takes me back to summertime as a kid when I hear an umpire shout “play ball！”
