Being fat is a nonstop fight between not being noticed and attracting much notice。 Sometimes you want to be accepted; instead, you‘re singled out and judged。 In 2015, when I became the first plussize designer to win Project Runway, I hoped it would be a moment not only for inclusive fashion, but also for all other fat human beings out there。 It wasn’t just me who had won; we‘d won。 Many women told me they were afraid to wear bright colors or show off their arms until they saw me doing it。 But some of the words on the Internet were terrible: “Why did they pick that fat designer?” “How can she encourage such an unhealthy lifestyle?” I got sad and put on more weight。 I reached a point where I couldn’t climb stairs without losing my breath。

I finally realized that if I didn‘t take care of myself, I couldn’t keep doing what I loved, so I went to see a doctor and started doing exercise every day。 After that I got more judgment, this time from people in the fat group who once supported me。 They turned their backs on me and said, “You can‘t be body positive and still losing weight。” I thought, “Well, why not? I wasn’t trying to be ‘prettier’; I wanted to have control of my life。”

Size should not divide us, whether we are fat, thin, or anywhere in the between。 I‘m designing clothes for plussize women, but one day I might be open to designing straight sizes。 People judge me for that, too。 But I just want to create clothes that make people feel good。 I want every woman to love herself and go after her dreams like I did。

1。 What was the author’s hope after she won Project Runaway?

A。 People would look up to her。

B。 Other fat people would share her pride。

C。 The clothes she designed would sell well。

D。 Fat people would lead the fashion industry。

2。 After the author saw the words on the Internet, she ________.

A。 lost interest in fashion

B。 lost control of her body

C。 stopped wearing bright colors

D。 decided to have a healthy lifestyle

3。 What was fat people‘s attitude to the author when she started losing weight?

A。 Dissatisfied。 B。 Uninterested。

C。 They laughed at her。 D。 They couldn’t believe it。

Today, we are told, children don‘t spend enough time in the fresh air。 Many of them are addicted to a screen either on a computer or a TV—they seem to be living in a virtual world。 They have lost touch with nature。

But now 400 organizations in the UK from playgroups to the National Health Service, are encouraging children to have some “wild time”。 They want kids to swap at least 30 minutes of watching TV or playing computer games for time playing outside。 Activities such as building dens, climbing trees, and playing hide and seek are just some of the things kids can do。 Even if they live in a city, they can go on adventures in the garden or the park。

Children often need a helping hand from Mum and Dad。 They need o be shown what to do and where to go。 Andy Simpson from National Health Service says, “We want parents to see what this magical wonder product does for their kids’ development, independence and creativity, by giving wild time a go。”

So despite the complicated world that young people grow up in now, it seems that going back to basics and experiencing “nature‘s playground” is what modern children need。 David Bond from Project Wild Thing says, “We need to make more space for wild time in children’s daily routine, freeing this generation of kids to have the sort of experiences that many of us took for granted。”

This might sound a bit oldfashioned to you or maybe, like me, it‘s made you think about sticking on your boots, getting outdoors and reliving your childhood。 There’s no age limit on enjoying yourself!

4。 Which of the following activities are children not encouraged to do?

A。 Building dens。 B。 Climbing trees。

C。 Playing hide and seek。 D。 Watching TV。

5。 According to Andy Simpson, what information can we get?

A。 Wild time is hard to design。

B。 Wild time is beneficial to children。

C。 Parents know the importance of wild time。

D。 Parents like keeping their children indoors。

6。 How is the passage mainly developed?

A。 By following time orders。 B。 By comparing。

C。 By listing examples。 D。 By giving explanations。

7。 What is the exact meaning of the underlined word?

A。 Interesting things。 B。 The same and repeated stuff。

C。 Terrible matters。 D。 Disappointing events。

Who‘s in control of your life? Who’s pulling your strings? For the majority of us, it‘s other people—society, colleagues, friends, family or our community。 We learned this way of operating when we were very young, of course。 We were brainwashed。 We discovered that feeling important and feeling accepted was a nice experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other people like us。 As Oscar Wilde puts it, “Most people are other people。 Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation。 ”

So when people tell us how wonderful we are, it makes us feel good。 We long for this good feeling like a drug—we are addicted to it and seek it out wherever we can。 Therefore, we are so eager for the approval of others that we live unhappy and limited lives, failing to do the things we really want to。 Just as drug addicts and alcoholics live worsened lives to keep getting their fix(成癮物), we worsen our own existence to get our own constant fix of approval。

But, just as with any drug, there is a price to pay。 The price of the approval drug is freedom—the freedom to be ourselves。 The truth is that we cannot control what other people think。 People have their own agenda, and they come with their own baggage and, in the end, they‘re more interested in themselves than in you。 Furthermore, if we try to live by the opinions of others, we will build our life on sinking sand。 Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions all the time。 The person who tries to please everyone will only end up getting tired and probably pleasing no one in the process。

So how can we take back control? I think there’s only one way—make a conscious decision to stop caring what other people think。 We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values—not values imposed from the outside by others, but innate values which come from within。 If we are driven by these values and not by the changing opinions and value systems of others。 we will live a more authentic, effective, purposeful and happy life。

8。 What Oscar Wilde says implies that ________.

A。 most people have a variety of thoughts

B。 we have thoughts similar to those of others

C。 other people‘s thoughts are more important

D。 most people’s thoughts are affected by others

9。 What does the author try to argue in the third paragraph?

A。 The price of taking the drug is freedom。

B。 We may lose ourselves to win the approval of others。

C。 We need to pay for what we want to get。

D。 Changing opinions may cost us our freedom。

10。 It can be concluded from the passage that ________.

A。 it‘s better to follow others’ opinions

B。 it‘s important to accept others’ comments

C。 we shouldn‘t change our own decision

D。 we shouldn’t care too much what others think

11。 The author tries to persuade the readers to accept his arguments mainly by ________.

A。 discussing questions B。 making suggestions

C。 analyzing causes and effects D。 providing examples and facts

D

With a focus now on the environmental influence over the fashion industry, some bloggers who cut their teeth sharing details of endless clothes and products are changing their direction—enter the “nobuy” movement。 The idea is simple: instead of buying new clothes or beauty products, you make a promise to use the things you already own。 Some people sign up to a “nobuy year”。 Others decide not to buy for a few weeks or months or choose “lowbuy” with a strict spending cap.

This life style has caught the attention of many people who struggle to keep up with the latest fashion。 Modern people‘s desire for material things is often not caused by poverty(貧窮), but by anxiety, which is further enlarged by the rise of social media。

“Social media puts pressure on people to spend money,” says Katherine Ormerod, author of Why Social Media is Ruining Your Life。 Many online influencers are given the items they use and wear for free, but Ormerod is determined not to wear any new products she is given。 “Really I just want to convince people they don’t have to spend a lot of money on fashion to look stylish and there‘s no such thing as ‘last season’ anymore,” she says。 “True style has never been about that anyway。”

However, selfsatisfied expressions of minimalist(極簡主義的) living have earned plenty of doubts。 “Minimalism is a good quality only when it’s a choice, and it‘s telling that its fan base is from the welloff middle class。 To people who don’t have enough in the first place, celebrations of ‘less is more’ can sound more like a luxury(奢侈) than a considerable loss。” Stephanie Land wrote in The New York Times。

12。 What does the underlined word “cap” mean in Paragraph 1?

A。 Soft hat。 B。 Loose budget。 C。 Upper limit。 D。 Money box。

13。 Which of the following does Katherine Ormerod agree with?

A。 Overspending results in anxiety。

B。 High price goes with good quality。

C。 True style is getting the latest product。

D。 Social media affects buying decisions。

14。 What does Stephanie Land think of minimalism?

A。 It‘s suitable for the rich。 B。 It’s a wise choice。

C。 It‘s out of date。 D。 It’s an impractical idea。

15。 What is the text mainly about?

A。 Buying habit。 B。 Social media。

C。 Fashion industry。 D。 Nobuy movement。
