The end of the best era in world football happened today

By Martin del Palacio

It is the end of the world as we know it。 It’s been 10 years and we haven‘t known anything else。 In 2008, Cristiano Ronaldo won his first Ballon d’Or。 That day, he defeated Kaka, Fernando Torres, Xavi and Lionel Messi。 We didn’t know at the time but it was the beginning of the most fantastic era in the history of world football。

For a decade, both the Portuguese and Messi have dominated the sport in a way that no one else had done before。 In the past, football eras were the property of only one player and often didn’t last long。 We tend to think that Maradona dominated the eighties, but in fact he was just the best in the world between 86 and 89。 Before that, it was Platini, and before him Cruyff with a gap in between。 Never too many, never too long。

But for the last years we were spoiled。 It wasn’t just that we had two players that forced each other to be the best, but changes in the sport, on the pitches, in technology, diet, training methods, made football in general the best ever。 Now is faster, more intense and more physical than ever before。 And the top two, Messi and Cristiano domontated it like never before。

But this World Cup has changed it all。 Cristiano started like he was ready to eat the world。 He was the fastest player in the tournament, which is no small feat at 33。 He scored four goals in the first two matches。 It seems that time didn’t pass through him。

Messi started in a completely different way, missing a penalty that would have given Argentina the victory against Iceland and then completely disappearing against Croatia。 But then, against Nigeria, he was back, scoring one of the lost incredible goals, controlling a long ball in stride, without ever slowing down, and finishing with his usually weaker right leg。

But the Round of 16 showed us that the two extraterrestrials have indeed become human, and that time doesn’t forgive even the greatest of the great。 Despite giving two assists, Messi was incapable to lead Argentina to a victory against a young and hungry France, and the apparent heir of the title of best in football, Kylian Mbappe。

Ronaldo was even worse。 He was a complete non factor in Portugal’s defeat to Uruguay。 He didn’t have a shot on goal, he couldn’t put his teammates in scoring positions and, in the end, he was noticeable only by the way he was whining at the referee。

It was pure desperation。 The frustration of knowing that the present is not theirs and the future is definitely not theirs。 A new era has started, the one of Mbappe, Neymar and many other new names that will dominate world football in the years to come。

They won’t, though, dominate it as Messi and Ronaldo did in our time。 We are seeing the end of the most incredible era in world football but we haven’t realized it yet。 We’re just marveled by the way things happen in this World Cup but when we understand the consequences, it will be too late。 Messi and Cristiano will be part of history, forever confined to highlight reels and stories we will tell to our grandchildren。 Obrigado, Ronaldo! Gracias, Messi!
