Predicative是表語嗎？英語有“表語”嗎？

Predicate作為英語語法術語是“謂語”，但是在邏輯學叫“斷言（不含主語）”。

名詞，也可以做動詞（既可及物，也可不及物）、形容詞。

predicate如此多義，其邏輯是啥呢？

predicate在mid-15c被使用之初，是邏輯術語，原本就是動詞，表declare， assert， affirm（從predication反向構詞而成）。

predicate作為名詞的基本語義是that which is said of a subject（關於主語的說法），這是名詞。其詞根-dictate為proclaim（

宣佈； 宣告； 宣告

）之義。pre-為“前面”之義。它來自拉丁語的 praedicatum，其中prae-對應英語的pre-。之所以有pre-， 筆者估計是在拉丁語句式中，表語和謂詞一般在句子後面出現，對前面（pre-）的主語做出表述（現代英語也是這種順序）。

英語中名詞也往往用於修飾其它名詞，predicate也被當作形容詞使用（1887年開始），語義為belonging to a predicate； constituting a part of what is asserted of anything（屬於謂語的；構成對任何事物的斷言的一部分的）。

predicative是從名詞predicate派生出來的（1846年）。整個predicate除了動詞，後面還有形容詞或名詞等等，也就它是個結構。

predicative是與“謂語內部的，或與謂語相關的”，比如predicative adjective（謂語形容詞），表明這個形容詞是謂語（predicate）的一部分。與此對照，predicate則是指“整個謂語的”。

predicative有“內部的蘊意”，大概強調predicative adjective能勝任做謂詞的一部分吧。

現在predicative和形容詞predicate大多是不作區分的，比如predicative adjective就簡寫為predicate adjective，而predicate noun， predicate verb都是很標準的。

筆者猜測，predicative adjective之所以流行，可能因為要與attributive adjectives（定語形容詞）想匹配吧（因為predicate與attributive看起來不協調）。

attributive adjectives被翻譯為定語形容詞，而predicative adjective被翻譯為表語形容詞。於是網上（包括百度詞典）就把predicative翻譯為名詞“表語”。這是不恰當的。Predicative只做形容詞。

我們經常說的“表語”，其英語為subject complement（主語補足語）。

漢語沒有“表語”（只有“謂語“）， 同樣英語也沒有”表語（predicative）“這樣的說法。

字尾-ive來源於拉丁語-ivus，後者涵義是 doing，related to doing，tending to do。
